Solar Spotlighted Due to Rising Electric Rates in Costa Rica

Last year energy costs rose 28 percent in Costa Rica making homeowners scared to open electric bills and businesses opting for new energy solutions. Energy bills are expected to rise another 12% in 2014. Is solar the solution? There was a large EXPO last weekend, The SOLAR DECATHLON at the Centro de Eventos de Pedregal in Belén, displaying over 600 stands plus 13 different financial institutions on hand to encourage businesses and homeowners/homebuilders to consider financing solar solutions for their homes. Spotlighted was the construction of a home that will be entered in an international contest in June to be held in Versailles, France. The home is called Trópika and is being built by 36 students from the Tecnológico de Costa Rica. Once the home is finished here, it will be disassembled and shipped to France for reassembly. There are 20 entries from around the globe where judges will be grading on architecture, engineering, energy efficiency, functionality and other factors. Trópika is designed for the needs of older adults, incorporating special needs requirements and larger doorways for wheelchair accessibility.
